Questions Regarding Site and Content
Question: Why is the layout purple?
Answer: Purple is the favourite color of the webmaster and none of the other Ultima-Java members argued with that!
Q: How/why did you come up with “Ultima-Java”?
A: Originally Frogman had come up with this as the ultimate attack for his character, and basing the name from a Guardian Force from SquareSoft's Final Fantasy VIII made a slight mistake of the memory. The attack was called "Gravija", not "Gravijava", so we ended up with a title that can roughly translates to "Ultimate Coffee."
QueenQeeko, Frogman and Stephanos used to be part of a group called Slightly Out of Order ('slightly' is an understatement, however) and when the group broke up Frogman decided he still wanted to work in a comic group. First, Frogman named the group The Advent Order and later changed the name to "Ultima-Java" because of all the ultimate coffee jokes. The story of Ultima-Java revolves around a coffeeshop anyways, so this ties in with the name of the comic and it's group.
"Ultima-Java" is still Frogman's ultimate attack and is also partly how the comic is named.
Q: Can I send you fanart?
A: Of course you can! But please keep it at a PG13 rating if you can
Q: Do you want fanart?
A: Gimme!
Q: Where do I send the fanart to?
A: Right now we haven't got a designated email for fanart, so you can email your work to any of the main Ultima-Java members or make a post on our forums.
Q: Why doesn’t the [insert name] section of the site work/why isn't it finished?
A: Some parts of the site are simply under construction. Sorry!
Q: Can I link to you?
A: Yes
Q: Will you link to me?
A: I’m sure that we’d be fairly happy to, depending on the content and nature of your site. Currently the way it works is this: you link us, we link you. You advertise us, we advertise you. T'is all fair. ^^
Q: Will you put an art/drawing/CGing tutorial on the site?
A: Possibly, if any of the artists could be bothered to make one.
Q: What do you use to build the site?
A: DreamWeaver, Notepad and a lot of patience. HTML and PHP are used a lot here as some of you may guess.
Questions Regarding Ultima-Java the Comic
Question: How’d you come up with the name?
Answer: As mentioned above, it was inspired by all the coffee jokes and named after the website.
Q: Are the characters based on real people?
A: The regular characters, Queen Qeeko, Andy Frogman and Stephanos, are based upon, Emily Allom (artist) Andy Evans (Webmaster/writer) Steve Olden (Writer). Other characters that make appearances are often completely fictional, however we may use a cameo every once in a while of our friends or our friends characters.
Q: So what's with the coffee thing?
A: We like coffee! But really, because of the title and it gives the characters and plot something to base around.
Q: Why isn't the comic always funny?
A:Frogman: Why isn't the coffee always funny? huh?
Queen Qeeko: that says comic... so you noticed that, huh? Because it wasn't created to be a comedy, but just traces of humour in it. It's otherwise going to be an on-again-off-sometimes serious series.
Q: Can my character cameo into the comic?
A: If you are not a member of our forums, don't count on it. Just the system we run, guys. Only time non forumites will be featured are special cameos and in-jokes. As for if you are a UJF member and requesting a guest appearence, it would depend what the character is doing, where they are, and what purpose we might have for the character in question.
Q: I know who does the art, but who writes it?
A: All three of us actually write the main bulk of the stories.
Q: Can I write a script for the comic?
A: The comic, as mentioned above is written by Queen Qeeko, Andy Frogman and Stephanos. However, there will be opportunities to write a scripts for us. This does not mean that we want 300 ideas for scripts e-mailed to us every day. We will let you know if we want guest scripts.
Q: What program do you use to make the comic?
A: Photoshop CS.
Q: Will you teach me how to use it/how to draw?
A: No.
Q: What is the method you use to make the comic?
A: First the comic is pencilled on A4 paper with 2H to HB lead. It is then scanned and opened into photoshop. The comic sketch as of now is transferred to a comic template for Ultima-Java and the comic is numbered. Above the sketch layer, first black lineart is drawn over the sketches using the pen tool to make a work path, and then stroked with a pt. 3 square brush. Some layers are linearted smaller or larger with pt2 or 4 square brushes. Under the lineart layer grayscale coloring then takes place followed by shading and any lighting if needed. Backgrounds are all the same layerand are completed a bit at a time or all at once. Effects are added, and then text and speech bubbles complete the comic.
Q: I discovered a hole in the plot! Where can I report it?
A: No you didn't! No where!
Questions Regarding Sub-comics
Q: WTF?
A: That's a fair question!
Q: What are sub-comics?
A: Sub-comics are comics that the three of us produce, that aren't the main UJ comic.
Q: Why?
A: Why not?
Q: Fair enough, but seriously, why make more than one comic?
A: Ah, but seriously, why not? If you can be happy producing one comic good for you, but some people have more than one creative outlet and here having more than one comic and story telling is an excellent way to do that. We like to tell stories, and this gives us the opportunity to appeal to more than one group of readers.
Q: Where can I find the Sub-Comics?
A: The sub-comics can be found by clicking on the drop menu below the Ultima-Java Comic button, in the Site Nav Column. Selecting a comic and then clicking "Go"
Q: Ok, I did that but nothing happened, what's up with that?
A: That's because there aren't any sub comics uploaded yet.
Q: Then why does it have some things on the list?
A: because those are some comics that we are going to do in the future.
Q: Wait, haven't I already read some issues of If You Believe?
A: Possibly, IYB is available to read on the forum and on Queen Qeeko's devART page.
Q: What titles are we likely to see?
A: The definate titles at the moment are:
• If You Believe
• An 8bit Adventure
• World Heroes
There'll be an announcement if any new ones are uploaded or confermed.
Q: Can I write scripts for any of these?
A: It depends upon the creator of the comics in question. Though it's most likly that if we want someone to write a comic for us, there will be a notification on the forum or on the Website Announcements.
Questions Regarding the Creators
Question: So, who the hell are you guys?
Frogman: Well, I'm Andy, I was born in UK on the 27th November 1985, making me 21 as I write this. I went to school locally in Aberdare, where I met Stephanos. After School I went to night school locally where I learned English, Litrature, Sociology and Website Design. After night school, I went to roughly an hours drive away in Pen y Groes, Bible College, where I got my Certificate of Higher Education in Christian Ministry. From there I cam home and been jobless ever since.
Just after I went to night school I joined up with a group called Slightly Out Of Order with Stephanos, and that's where I met Queen Qeeko. We got on well from the start and after knowing here little under a year, we started Online dating. The following months in college were difficult, followed by another year of troubles, when I was unable to find a job.
Under certain prospects and the thought of seeing Qeeko for the first time, in Oct 2005 I went out to Australia. While here, Slightly Out of Order disbanded, and I started Advent Order of the Sith, a Star Wars Fan Site, which eventually became Ultima-Java.
After a month, just after my birthday, I proposed to her and she is now my fiancé. She came back with me in January 2006 and stayed with me until july when her visa ran out... the past months have been very hard, however we are looking forward to seeing each other again soon!
And thats me!
QueenQeeko: I'm the main artist of the UJ site and I go by the name QueenQeeko. My real name is Emily and I am engaged to Andy. I was born in Southeast Queensland Australia in 1987 and have always had a passion to draw. Online, my persona if of the Queen of Chaos and it's all Stephanos's fault. XD I have a bit of an obsession with the color red and were it not for outside interference I would probably live on the internet and get diabetes.
Frogman: Wow... I really waffled...
Stephanos: Yeah you did... Well lets see, as should be obvious now I go by the online screen name of Stephanos. I was born on March the 19th of 1986, umm, went to school here in Aberdare where I met Andy and we’ve been friends with him ever since.
I’m a mega giant colossal geek/nerd, I watch way too many sci-fi shows and cartoons, I read comics (of the printed variety) and could (or rather I do) rant for hours on end about Transformers or other 80s cartoons.
Q: Were/are you influenced by other comic authors?
Frogman: I try to be as original as possible, but I do have people that I aspire too, Kevin Smith and his amazing work on "The Jersey Saga" and "Green Arrow", Mark Waid is a spectacular writer, especially his work on DC's "Kingdom Come", and with the same sort of grandeur Kurt Busiek for his work on "Marvels". The whole idea of knowing the characters and knowing how they would react in situations inspires me to look deep within my own characters and come up with histories and back stories that explain their behaviour, some which I may never use. That closeness to my characters has been near to my heart since reading "Justice" by Jim Krueger. In which the story is written from the villains point of view, and even though they know what they are doing is illegal, the writing shows a deep understanding in the conviction that these villains believe what they are doing is right.
Yes I realize that these are also mostly Alex Ross comics, I came to these comics because of his amazing artwork, but I stayed because of the stories that this man has brought to life!
Qeeko: For comics and webcomics I'd say that first and foremost, Brian Clevinger's 8-Bit Theater was a huge influence to me, in the sense of the world he created, the humour he used and his execution of 8-bit sprites. It originally had me making my own sprite comics out of fun, but with my talent to draw I also drew little forum related comics on the 8BT forums. Other comics that further fed my imagination include Megatokyo, Dominic Deegan, MacHall and to a lesser extent, VG Cats. Ongoing influence comes from the art, storytelling and humor of these comics but also Lang Lang, Lozers, WTF Comics, Grim Tales and MNT Gaiden. Exterminatus Now is a constant feeding tube of humour to me, and it's thanks to this comic that I started drawing anthro characters and comics.
Stephanos: Well as far as web comic authors go, credit has to go to David Anez of Bob and George fame, for inspiring me with this sprite comic madness I seem to have acquired. Brain Clevinger also deserves a medal for the surprisingly well crafted comic 8 Bit Theatre, which unlike Bob and George, continues to be increasingly funny.
As far a printed comic writers go I find Dan Slot does fantastic work on She Hulk, able to craft characters I actually care about. Also Simon Furman of Transformers fame deserves credit, for still being able to come up with new ideas and concepts for something he’s been writing for twenty years.
Q: Were/are you influenced by other cartoons/movies/directors/writers?
Frogman: I suppose other influences would be J.R.R. Tolkin for helping me understand a serious fantasy world, Terry Pratchett for his Discworld novels, teaching me how to turn a real fantasy life, into something humorous. Dean Devlin for "Stargate", that helped me when working out how the interspacial corridor worked, as well as Douglas Adams for some of the "science" that he provides in his "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" books. Finally some ideas that I get for stories come from songs that I've listened too, sometimes while reading you may be able to pick up on some themes that have come from songs.
Qeeko: As far as comedic media goes, Doug Adams has always been someone that has been a great influence to me in my behaviour and my creativity. The way the man crafted nonsense into something that almost physically worked is anyone's guess and I loved the way he did it. I've also always loved Monty Python. I've always liked things that are a little different. Movies like Desperado, the Crow, Die Hard and Pulp Fiction have some of the greatest character interactions, and these are the things I tend to emphasize on a lot. I like expression, I like development. Cartoon influences come from animes like Cyborg 009, Robotech, Martian Successor Nadesico and anything by Miziyaki, The Castle of Cagliostro in particular. The plots, characters and artwork all play an important part to me in regard to quality.
Stephanos: Well as far as Cartoons go, I’ve always loved Bruce Timm and Paul Dini’s Batman The Animated Series. One of the best cartoons produced in the 90s and putting most of it’s contemporises to shame.
Terry Pratchett and especially Douglas Adams have had a major impact on my imagination with their hilarious and yet though provoking spins on the fantasy and sci-fi genre.
