Hobbit Day

Andy FrogmanBelieve it or not today is actually Hobbit Day. The 22nd of September is the Birthday of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, and is held as a celebration of the works of J.R.R Tolkien, specifically The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, in which the two Hobbits in questions play pivotal roles leading up to the destruction of Sauron. Despite the day already being Wednesday, usually this entire week is held in observance, and is known as Tolkien Week. Tolkien week takes place on the calendar week that contains the 22nd, or for some the 14th.

As it turns out there has been a lot of research into the equivalent days of the Shire Calendar and the currently used Gregorian Calendar, and some arguments have arose as to the actual dates of the Hobbit’s Birthdays. Some say as the Books say, that it’s the 22nd of September, where as researches into the deeper Middle Earth Lore have pointed out that the Calendar of the Shire is different from the Gregorian and is in advance by near 10 days. These people say that Hobbit Day should be celebrated on the 14th rather than the 22nd of September.

This day is usually celebrated in true Hobbit fashion with feasting, parties, dancing and much consumption of ale! Oh and all done barefoot!

I would have celebrated today by watching the movies, as I’m sure many of you will do, but I don’t have them, instead I’ll just walk around barefoot, where although that won’t differ from any other day, it’s will be done in quiet observance, of the Birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo.

Happy Birthday Hobbit day to all Hobbits everywhere!
